Eligible Activities For RED Professional Development Award

Points are allocated based on the activity's level and time commitment - the more time and effort required, the more points the activity is worth.  

For the Professional Development Award, you must have:

  • At least 1 point from Volunteering  
  • At least 2 points from Careers Engagement (e.g. careers sessions, workshops, or fairs)  

If you are new to the award but have already completed some of this activity, you can backdate anything you have done since you started at the university!

Note: There is some flexibility in how activities are categorised. If your activity doesn’t clearly fit into a listed section, just choose the closest match and use the reflection box in your RED Professional Development Award pathway to explain your submission.

Careers Fair

Attend a Career fair and scan your card at the entrance to prove your attendance. This must have a career or professional development focus.

This activity counts towards the required 2 points of Careers Sessions

Attend a RED Session

Attend a RED session, online or in person.

This activity counts towards the required 2 points of Careers Sessions

Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe - 1 session only Attend 1 Conversation Cafe session. If you have attended 3 or more sessions, please complete the 'Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe - 3 or more sessions' activity instead for 5 points.
Henley Business School Mentoring - 1 session only Attend at least 1 Henley Business School mentoring session.
Study Advice and Library Academic Skills Webinars - 1 session only
Attend 1academic skills webinar. If you have completed 3 or more webinars, please complete the 'Study Advice and Library Academic Skills Webinars - 3 or more sessions’ activity instead for 5 points.
RSU Event Attend a training/development-focused Reading Student Union (RSU) event.
Careers Event recording Watch the recording of any careers events you missed to earn one point.
Careers & Employability Sessions - 1 session only

Attend 1 careers session bookable via MyJobsOnline If you have attended 3 or more sessions, please complete the 'Careers & Employability Sessions - 3 or more sessions' activity instead for 5 points.

This activity counts towards the required 2 points of Careers Sessions

One-off Volunteering - One day or less

Volunteering of one day or less. You can find Volunteering Opportunities at Latest Volunteering Opportunities, Reading Voluntary Action's website, or sign up to RSU's One-Off Volunteering Opportunities newsletter.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe – 3
Attend at least 3 Conversation Cafe sessions.
Self Reflective App from Study Advice Use the Self Reflective App to assess academic skills and get tailored feedback and specifically selected resources chosen to support your individual needs.
Study Smart from Study Advice Prepare for university study with this free online course designed especially for new undergraduate students.
Study Advice and Library Academic Skills Webinars - 3 or more sessions Friendly webinars to help you with all aspects of your study. If you have not completed 3 webinars, you can use the 'Study Advice and Library Academic Skills Webinars - 1 session only' activity for 1 point

STaR Mentoring

Become a STaR Mentor, attend the training and mentor first year students.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Volunteering - 2 to 10 days

Volunteering for between 2 and 10 days. You can find Volunteering Opportunities at Latest Volunteering Opportunities or Reading Voluntary Action's website. Take part in a short Students in Schools placement (2-10 days) supporting learning in a local school.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Careers & Employability Sessions - 3 or more sessions

These opportunities are bookable via MyJobsOnline. If you have attended fewer than 3 sessions, please complete the 'Careers & Employability Sessions - 1 only' activity instead for 1 point.

This activity counts towards the required 2 points of Careers Sessions

Student Representative

Serve as a Student Representative.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Campus Jobs and other part time work - short term and one-off roles
Short term (fewer than 10 days) and one-off roles secured through Campus Jobs or other paid work such as self-employment or working at an event.
Thrive Mentoring Participate in a Thrive mentoring partnership. Available to UG and PGT students, HBS students not eligible (HBS has their own mentoring scheme you can use for this activity instead.)
Society Committee Member

Serve as a Society Committee Member.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Online and in-Person Training Training submitted for this activity must be more than one hour, or an accumulation of multiple courses. These must be extra-curricular and not part of your degree. Examples include: LinkedIn Learning, Open Learn, United Nations System Staff College. Completing training for voluntary roles also counts, including STaR Mentor training and Students in Schools training.

Volunteering - Regular and sustained

Attend regular and sustained volunteering, of more than 10 days. You can find Volunteering Opportunities at Latest Volunteering Opportunities or Reading Voluntary Action's website. You can also use this activity for completing a full 10-week Students in Schools placement, volunteering weekly in a local primary or secondary school. You can count two different volunteering opportunities, in the two activities of the same name.

This activity counts as the required 1 point of Volunteering

Work experience (including internships) Work experience including RIS internships and longer-term Campus Jobs opportunities such as regular part time work, consisting of more than 10 days. This excludes in-curriculum placements. You can count two different work experience opportunities, in the two activities of the same name.
