What is the Sustainable Action Award?
The Reading Experience and Development (RED) Sustainable Action Award is one of the University of Reading’s Official Skills Awards. It is an opportunity for those currently studying at the University of Reading to gain awareness of sustainable issues and opportunities. Linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the award will challenge you to think about the wide-ranging opportunities you can undertake to support the development of a sustainable world.
In doing so you will gain an award that will demonstrate your sustainability awareness and understanding to future employers, evidencing some of the skills that many companies are actively seeking, whilst committing to making the world a better place for all.
The RED Sustainable Action Award has been designed to be flexible around your studies and you can choose when to complete it. You are also able to transfer 10 hours of activity to or from this award between the other two University of Reading Skills Awards (RED Award and RED Global Engagement Award) if the activity is relevant for those awards.

How do I complete it?
To successfully achieve the Award you will need to complete 40 hours of activity across two components (Acquire and Act), with a minimum of 10 hours of activity in each individual element. You will then demonstrate how you feel you have become more aware of sustainability issues, solutions and opportunities (Articulate) before reflecting on your experience.
What counts as Sustainable Action?
Sustainable Action is a broad term that could cover a range of different areas. In order for your activity to count towards the award you will need to map it against the UN Sustainable Development Goals and be able to justify how your activity is supporting these goals. You may find it helpful to take a look at these before you get started.
Throughout Semester 1, Careers will run ‘Introduction to the RED Awards’ sessions. This session is not compulsory but as well as providing some options of what you can get involved with, we will also give you an overview of all the skills awards available to you and what the next steps are for you to start completing the awards you want to take part in. You can book your attendance for this via MyJobsOnline.
