Everything you need to know about the recent changes to the RED Awards

Changes to the RED Awards – What You Need to Know

What’s Changing?

From 1st September, we’re moving away from an hours-based system and introducing a more flexible, points-based approach – designed to be simpler, less time-consuming, and more engaging than ever before.

The new system will allow you to earn points by completing a variety of activities that suit your interests, schedules, and career goals – giving you more flexibility to shape the awards to your needs.

Full details will be shared closer to launch – stay tuned!

Currently Working on a RED Award?

If you're already completing a RED Award, here’s what you need to know:

  • You can continue on your current pathway, but you must opt in by 1st September by emailing red@reading.ac.uk. Please include your name, student number, and the pathway you wish to extend access to (RED, RED Sustainable Action, or RED Global Engagement) in the email.
  • If you opt in, you'll have until 31st October to complete your award. After this date, the current RED Awards will be removed from MyJobsOnline.
  • Or, you can start fresh with the new RED Awards from 1st September, offering a more accessible and rewarding experience.

What Should You Do?

  • If you're close to finishing your award, we recommend completing it as soon as possible.
  • Not started yet? Consider waiting for the new pathway – it’s designed to better fit around your studies and personal development.
  • Planning to switch to the new RED Award? Make sure to save a copy of any completed activities or reflections you've already logged, as you won’t be able to access the current pathways after 1st September.
