Month 4 - CVs and Cover Letters
You are now in month four of your mentoring partnership. Getting your mentor’s advice on your CV and Cover Letter can be a daunting activity, but your mentor is there to help you, and is not expecting your CV and cover letter to be the finished article.
CVs
Your CV is where you detail your qualifications, skills and experience which are relevant to the role you are looking at applying for. If you are not sure what opportunities you want to apply for, you can work with your mentor on creating a template CV, which you can then tailor to opportunities you apply for in the future.
If you already have a CV, perhaps share this with your mentor to get their expertise on areas they may suggest improving. Our Careers Service provide more information on CVs and CV templates, which you can use with your mentor.
Cover Letters
Cover letters are sometimes required by organisations, alongside your CV, when applying for opportunities. They allow you to elaborate on why you are applying for the role and how you meet the criteria. Your mentor can support you in writing a cover letter, providing industry insights and helping you to showcase your transferable skills.
If you have a cover letter template from previous applications, consider sharing this with your mentor to get their advice and guidance. Our Careers Service also offer further information on cover letters.
Remember you can access all 10 talking points so feel free to look through them all, find topics that interest you most or mix up the order however suits you and your mentor.
