Risk of harm/abuse from others (inc. radicalisation)
This could include a wide variety of circumstances, including bullying, harassment, domestic abuse, hate crime, honour-based threats, stalking, radicalisation etc.
It could be physical, phycological, sexual, neglect, financial, discriminatory, organizational, domestic, modern slavery or exploitation.
If a student tells you that they have been harmed or they are a risk of harm from others, you can help them by:
- Listening without judgement. Be very sensitive when trying to get a picture of what has happened. Clarifying questions can come across as implying judgement even if that is not what you meant
- Encouraging them to seek help from an appropriate agency, particularly if they need immediate protection. The Student Welfare Team can assist you/the student to identify the best source of help/protection and will support the student to access it. If there is a statutory safeguarding concern the Student Welfare team will instigate the relevant processes. You can use the notification of concern route to highlight the issue or in case of immediate need contact the Student Welfare Team directly.
You can refresh your understanding of our obligations to prevent radicalisation or violent extremism by taking the short online course on PREVENT and Safeguarding. This course is specifically designed for staff working in University of Reading.
You can also undertake a 60mnute online course on Safeguarding Essentials within a university context.
