Catering colleague attends Royal Garden Party
24 May 2024
A dedicated staff member of over two decades was honoured with an invitation to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this week.
Kathy Gray was nominated to represent the University at the prestigious event on Tuesday (21 May) in recognition of her 21 years of service in our Catering team.
During her tenure, Kathy has become an integral part of the university community, especially in her role overseeing the University’s meal plans for students.
Her hard work and compassionate approach have significantly enhanced the dining experience, and overall wellbeing of countless students.
Kathy said: “Reflecting on my 21 years at the University of Reading, I am filled with a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. When I first joined, I could not have imagined the journey ahead, nor the profound impact this community would have had on me.
“Over the years, I have had the privilege of overseeing part of the students’ welfare on our meal plans, and witnessing the University evolve and grow has been incredible. I am grateful to have played a role in diversifying our dining experience, to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.
“Being chosen to represent the University at the Royal Garden Party is an extraordinary honour, and one of the highlights of my career. This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the collective efforts of everyone in our community who strives to make a difference every day.
“The invitation to the Palace feels like a celebration of all the hard work and dedication that has gone in to supporting our students over the years. It’s a moment that highlights the importance of our mission and inspires me to continue my contribution to making our university so very special.”
Gary attends postponed Garden Party
Another respected former colleague, Gary McGuirk, also attended Buckingham Palace for a postponed Royal Garden Party earlier in May.
Gary spent 17 years at Reading before leaving last year. He was Deputy Security Services Manager and played a key role in helping keep staff and students at the University safe.
The 2023 Garden Party was delayed by a year, but Gary was able to attend after being nominated last year by the University and shared a photo from the day with us.
He said: “It was a truly amazing experience on a perfect sunny day. I would like to express my gratitude and say a huge thank you for my nomination.”
