New guidance on making research data accessible
10 June 2024
New guidance on sharing research data has been published in accordance with our commitment to open research.
The University’s Research Data Management Policy has been updated, requiring all researchers, including research students, to publish data that substantiates research findings.
The Policy reflects a research environment in which research organisations, funding bodies and many publishers expect that data supporting all stages of research – from grant applications to findings - will be preserved and made accessible to the fullest extent possible.
The University's Research Data Service supports implementation of the Policy by providing guidance, training and support. It also manages the University's data repository, the Research Data Archive, which can be used by any researcher or research student to preserve and share their data.
Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), said: “The sharing of research data is fundamental to good research practice and supports the University's commitment to transparency and reproducibility in research.
“I am pleased to see our Research Data Management Policy refreshed and made fit for the future. All members of our research community should be aware of this policy and consider how it applies to their work.”
The updated Policy aligns with the University's position on Open Research and with key sector frameworks, including the Concordat on Open Research Data and the FAIR Principles for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable research data.
It recognises the fundamental importance of research data management in establishing the quality and integrity of research and enabling the verification of research findings, as well as the value of datasets as primary research outputs.
