Campus heating being switched off for summer
03 May 2023
With warmer weather arriving, the University will today (Wednesday 3 May) begin the process of switching off its heating systems for the summer.
This will begin with the radiator heating systems being turned off in buildings, while heating through ventilation systems will be turned off a little later, to take the chill off the supply air to these systems.
The University switches off its heating systems every summer, both to conserve energy and to allow major maintenance work and statutory inspections to be carried out.
Energy bills are a very significant cost to the University, and are expected to exceed allocated budget by around £2 million this financial year.
Next’s years bills will be significantly higher again, due to the steep rise in gas prices, so work is under way to explore new opportunities to help manage these costs.
This includes the Sustainability team's Our Future First programme, which is encouraging and supporting colleagues to reduce their own, and therefore the University's, environmental impact.
