Focusing on the broad areas of accounting and management, with an international emphasis, this undergraduate degree is designed to prepare you for a variety of managerial roles in both the public and private sectors.

The BA Accounting (Beijing Institute of Technology) has been accredited directly by two professional accountancy bodies:

  • the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
  • the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

You will also have the opportunity to apply for credit for prior learning from professional bodies, including the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

This flexible degree allows you to tailor your studies and shape your degree in line with your interests.

Accounting

You will gain a strong understanding of core accounting theory and develop practical application and analysis skills.

You can also apply for credit for prior learning from professional bodies like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Management

The management aspect of the degree teaches you the basic principles of a company's external environments, such as markets, marketing, and strategy.

In addition to 17 compulsory degree-level modules, you must complete three compulsory non-credit-bearing foundation modules in the first year.

There are also several additional requirements, as stipulated by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), that are compulsory and credit-bearing to achieve the BIT BSc Management award. These additional elements are outlined in the BIT BSc Management programme specification and are separate from the University of Reading qualification.

According to the admission rules in China, BIT will only make offers to students who have achieved top 5% after taking the Chinese University Entry exams (GaoKao).

Introduction to Business and Management

Develop your ability to think critically and argue persuasively in business and management contexts. You'll learn basic business and management theory such as entrepreneurship, business planning, marketing, human resource management, finance and accounting.

Academic Skills

Enhance your academic study and communication skills while gradually building confidence and mastering transferable abilities. Engage in various in-class group activities and individual study tasks to develop these skills effectively.

International English

Gain confidence in understanding and using English in academic situations. Through varied activities, develop your reading, writing and listening skills and become an active contributor to discussions and debates.

Compulsory modules

Introduction to Accounting

An introduction to double-entry bookkeeping and the preparation of financial statements for sole traders and limited companies. The module aims to help students to develop a sound understanding of the techniques of double-entry bookkeeping, so that they can apply its principles in recording accounting transactions, adjusting financial records and preparing non-complex financial statements.

Introductory Economics for Business and Finance

An introduction to economics for students of business and finance. The module aims to provide an introduction to both microeconomics and macroeconomics sufficient to help students of business and finance understand the economic forces at play and economic framework that underpins their specific field.

People and Organisations

People and Organisation is an introduction to Organisational Behaviour in the contemporary workplace. Employing a number of social science disciplines the module invites students to analyse critically the interrelation between individuals, groups and organisations and their influence on one another.

Assurance, Governance and Ethics

This module introduces students to the concepts of assurance, governance and ethics in the corporate environment and explores the role of management and auditors in this context.

Introduction to Business

This module introduces you to different aspects of 'business' and aims to develop your academic and professional skills that will be applied at university and in the workplace.

Further Management Accounting 

Gain insight into financial information techniques, principles, and concepts for organisational decision-making, planning, and control. Understand theories, technical language, and practices within the business context, including contemporary management accounting developments.

Business Finance

Discover the purpose of the financial management function within a business. Explore the theory and practice of financing decisions. Develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of financial management, assessing the working capital needs of a business and the ways in which the elements of working capital may be managed.

Management Skills

The module is focused on guidance and support in developing your employability, including improving the likelihood of securing a placement or first job.

An introduction to the Management of Information Systems

Explore the fundamental concepts and theories that underpin the design, implementation, control, evaluation and strategic use of information systems in business.

Audit and Assurance

Gain an understanding of the critical aspects of managing assurance and audit engagements. You'll examine current issues facing the audit profession, the legal frameworks and ethical principles that auditors must be aware of, the identification of key assurance risks and procedures, and reporting on assurance engagements.

International Corporate Financial Reporting

Build on the knowledge and skills acquired in your first year module, Business in Practice: Accounting for managers. You'll look closely at the content and application of a range of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Advanced Management Accounting

Gain further understanding of the role of management accounting in organisational decision making, planning, control and performance management.

Advanced Business Finance

The module aims to provide an analytical framework for an understanding of the firm’s major financial decisions by considering the theoretical models that explain these decisions. It develops the knowledge, understanding and skills of financial management introduced in the Business Finance module.

Professional and Business Ethics

Examine the moral norms of international accounting, investment and financial management. Within the business world, the overwhelming preoccupation with money and profit introduce a variety of conflicting moral pressures. Using real-world scenarios, you'll explore the ethical questions raised and develop the analytical, reflexive and decision-making skills to tackle a range of moral issues.

Business Strategy for Accountants

Enhance your current knowledge and analyse an organisation and its environment, evaluate its current position and performance from both a financial and a non-financial perspective, evaluate the likely consequences of strategic choices and recommend strategies.

Contemporary Issues in Accounting

Gain knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of the issues facing the accountancy profession. You'll explore the theoretical and empirical evidence relating to a range of topical issues.

Advanced International Financial Reporting

Explore advanced topics in financial reporting, as well as the theories that underpin financial accounting, and examine how these contribute to current financial reporting and practice. You'll gain knowledge and understanding of a number of International Financial Reporting Standards.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: This programme is not available to UK or Republic of Ireland students.

New international students: The fee for academic year 2023/24 was RMB 78,000.
