Essentials Opportunities Volunteering Students in Schools How the scheme works

Students in Schools runs during term time and involves a weekly commitment to support pupils in a local school. You’ll be matched with a placement based on your availability, travel preferences and interests — and we’ll provide all the guidance and training you need.

What You’ll Do

You’ll volunteer once a week (usually for 1–2 hours) during the school day. Your exact role depends on your placement — you can choose from a range of opportunities in both primary and secondary schools:

In primary schools, you might:

  • Help pupils develop their reading confidence one-to-one or in small groups

  • Support classroom activities and group work

  • Provide encouragement and build positive relationships

In secondary schools, you might:

  • Support pupils with English, maths, or science

  • Offer one-to-one academic help or small group tutoring

  • Act as a mentor and role model, helping build confidence and motivation

Who Can Take Part?

All students at the University of Reading are welcome to apply — including postgraduates, international students, and those from any degree discipline.

Time Commitment

  • Volunteer weekly for at least 10 weeks

  • Most placements are during school hours, usually mornings or early afternoons

  • 20 total hours that can count towards the RED Award

Training & Support

  • Full training provided before you start, including safeguarding and school conduct

  • We’ll support you with preparation, resources, and reflective tools

  • The Students in Schools team is on hand throughout your placement
