This Black History Month, join us in celebrating Black excellence, creativity, and culture through a series of exciting events across campus.     Black Arts Showcase

    All Day, 25 Oct
    Reading Students’ Union

    This all-day event is a celebration of Black creativity, with art, poetry, and sport throughout the day. Take part in the open mic, where Black students, staff, and community members can share their voices through song, poetry, and spoken word. The evening Showcase will feature performances from Black students and community members.
    Daytime events are free, and evening tickets are available here.

    Annual Black History Month Flagship Event: Celebrating Reading’s Black Excellence

    Join us for our Black History Month Flagship Event, a vibrant community fête celebrating Reading’s Black excellence. This event will feature Black-owned businesses, captivating art displays, live music, and inspiring workshops and seminars. It’s an incredible opportunity to honour Black history and embrace this year’s theme: "Reclaiming Narratives."

    Creative Connection: Amplifying Black Filmmakers

    Celebrate Black filmmakers with Creative Connection at this special event featuring short films by Caribbean and African creatives, live music, and a post-screening Q&A. Supported by the University of Reading and BAME Staff Network, this event will showcase underrepresented talent in the film industry.

    Exhibition: Black Experiences – Reclaiming Narratives

    Library, Whiteknights Campus

    This free exhibition, hosted by the BAME+ Allies Network, showcases artwork created by Black and BAME participants, amplifying Black voices and narratives. Inspired by feedback from Black Inclusion Week 2024, the exhibit invites reflection, discussion, and appreciation of diverse perspectives through creativity.

    Historicising Black Musical Cultures Across Borders

    This discussion, "Black British Music Beyond Borders," offers a chance to explore the transnational flows of Black British music over the last century. Join us for an engaging conversation accompanied by curated playlists.

    Racial equality in the job market

    School of Philosophy, Politics and Economics are hosting a friendly discussion with employers and academics about how we deal with racial inequality in the job market. This is a wonderful opportunity to voice any worries, opinions or ask questions about any changes you wish to see. This event will focus mostly on SPPE industries, however is open for any student or staff to attend.

    What Did Diversity Mean in the Roman World?

    Reading Museum, Reading Town Centre

    Join Dr. Sam Agbamu as he explores the ancient Roman concept of "diversitas" and its relevance to modern conversations around diversity and race. This lecture will challenge common misconceptions about the ancient world and its influence on white supremacist narratives.
